Variable-speed compressor
Also called an inverter. It ramps up and down to match the weather, so you get steadier temperatures and fewer on-off cycles.
Cold-climate rating
These models keep heating at lower outdoor temperatures than standard units. Ask how much heat a model puts out well below freezing.
Backup heat sizing

How long does it take to install a heat pump?
Most take four to eight hours. Larger homes, new ductwork or electrical upgrades can add time.
Is it worth replacing a heat pump that still uses R-22?
Usually, yes, once it needs a major repair. R-22 has been phased out, so recharging a leaking system gets expensive, and units that old are near the end of their life anyway. A new heat pump uses current refrigerant and current efficiency ratings.
Can a heat pump replace my electric baseboard heat?
Yes. It uses far less electricity than baseboard heaters for the same heat and adds air conditioning. Homes without ducts usually get ductless mini-splits.
Should I choose a variable-speed heat pump?
