A heat pump doesn’t burn fuel to make heat. It moves heat. In winter it pulls heat from the outdoor air and brings it inside. In summer it runs in reverse, pulling heat out of your home like an air conditioner. Because it moves heat instead of creating it, a heat pump can deliver more heating energy than the electricity it uses.
When outdoor temperatures drop very low, the system can switch to backup heat: electric strips in the air handler, or your existing gas or oil furnace in a dual-fuel setup.
A modern heat pump can reduce electricity use for heating by up to 75% compared with electric resistance heating like baseboard heaters or an electric furnace.
