City Water vs. Well Water
Public water
Your utility treats and disinfects the water and publishes an annual water quality report. Most homeowners on public water filter for taste, smell, sediment or the disinfectant itself.
Private well
Nobody treats or tests well water for you. What comes out of the tap depends on the ground, the well and the plumbing, so test first and match treatment to the results.
Chloramine in Fredericksburg-Area Water
Spotsylvania County Utilities uses chloramines, “the combination of ammonia and chlorine,” to keep a disinfectant in the water system. It switches to free chlorine during its annual spring flushing.
Source: Spotsylvania County Utilities“Stafford County adds chloramines to the water throughout the year.” Every few years the County switches to free chlorine to clean its water mains. During those periods you may notice a stronger chlorine smell for a few weeks.
Source: Stafford County UtilitiesChloramine is more stable than free chlorine, and a basic carbon filter won’t remove it as well. To cut its taste or smell, choose a filter made for chloramine.
Well Water Around Fredericksburg
Across 516 samples, total coliform bacteria were present in 30% and E. coli in 3%. A pH below 6.5 turned up in 48% of samples. The report notes that “low pH can be a driver of how corrosive the water is.”
Source: Virginia Household Water Quality ProgramThese were samples homeowners chose to bring in, not a random survey of county wells. They still show why clear water isn’t proof of a healthy well.
Low-pH water can corrode copper pipes and fixtures. Bacteria call for disinfection, not just filtration. Each problem needs a different fix, so testing comes first.
What a Whole-Home System Can Include
We recommend only the pieces your water calls for. Common building blocks:
Sediment filter
Catches sand, grit and rust particles before they reach your fixtures, water heater and appliances.
Carbon filter
Reduces chlorine or chloramine taste and odor. For county water treated with chloramine, we’d use a filter rated for it.
Water softener
Removes the hardness minerals that leave scale on fixtures and inside water heaters, if testing shows your water needs it.
UV disinfection
Treats well water for bacteria using ultraviolet light, usually after a sediment filter.
pH neutralizer
Raises the pH of acidic well water so it’s less corrosive to your plumbing.
How We Put a System Together
Test the water
On a well, that means a lab test. On public water, we start with your utility’s water quality report and what you’re noticing at the tap.
Match the equipment
We size the system to your household and choose only the stages your results call for.
Install at the main line
The system goes where water enters your home, after the meter or well pressure tank, with a bypass valve so you can keep water flowing during filter changes.
Show you the upkeep
We walk you through filter changes and anything else the system needs.
Keeping It Working
A clogged sediment cartridge cuts your water pressure, and a spent carbon filter stops removing taste and odor. Replace cartridges on the manufacturer’s schedule, and sooner if pressure drops. Softeners need salt, and UV lamps need replacing on schedule. If you’d rather not keep track, we can handle filter changes for you.
Point-of-Use or Whole Home?
Point-of-use
An under-sink filter or reverse osmosis unit treats water at one faucet, usually for drinking and cooking. It fits when your only concern is drinking water.
Whole home
Treats all the water entering the house, including showers, laundry and your water heater. It’s the better fit for sediment, bacteria, corrosive water or hardness. Some homes use both.

Water Filtration FAQs
Why does my Stafford tap water sometimes smell more like chlorine?
Stafford County normally uses chloramines, but every few years it switches to free chlorine for several weeks to clean its water mains (Stafford County Utilities). A stronger chlorine smell during a switch is expected. A carbon filter can reduce it.
How often should I test my well in Spotsylvania, Caroline or King George?
The Virginia Department of Health recommends testing for bacteria and nitrate every year, including total coliform and E. coli. It also suggests testing arsenic, lead, nitrate and pH about every five years (VDH). After a well is installed, further testing is up to you.
Does every whole-house carbon filter remove chloramine?
No. A filter built for chlorine may not reduce chloramine much. Look for one rated for chloramine, or ask us to recommend one.
Will a whole-house filter lower my water pressure?
A system sized for your home shouldn’t cause a noticeable drop. If pressure falls off over time, the cartridge is probably clogged and due for a change.
If I install a whole-house filter, do I still need a water softener?
They do different jobs. A filter catches sediment and reduces taste and odor. A softener removes the minerals that cause scale. A water test tells you whether you need one, the other or both.
