How a Sump Pump Works

Groundwater around your foundation drains into a pit, the sump basin, at the lowest point of the basement or crawlspace. Rising water lifts a float switch that turns the pump on. The pump pushes the water out through a discharge pipe, and a check valve keeps it from falling back into the pit.

Signs Your Sump Pump Is Failing

  • It runs constantly, even when it hasn’t rained
  • It never seems to run, even after a heavy storm
  • Grinding, rattling or loud humming when it starts
  • It turns on and off every few seconds
  • Rust, corrosion or mineral crust on the pump or the pipe
  • You don’t know how old the pump is

A stuck float or failed check valve can often be repaired. A worn motor or an undersized pump is usually better replaced before the next big storm.

Test Your Sump Pump in Five Minutes

  1. Check the power

Make sure the pump is plugged in and its outlet or breaker hasn’t tripped.

  2. Add water

Lift the lid and slowly pour a bucket of water into the pit until the float rises.

  3. Watch it run

The pump should start on its own, empty the pit and shut off. Listen for grinding or rattling.

  4. Check outside

Go to where the discharge pipe ends and make sure the water came out there.

If the pump didn’t start, didn’t shut off or the water never reached the outside, call 540-300-6932.

Sump Pump Replacement and New Installation

Replacement

We remove the old pump, check the basin and check valve, set a new pump sized for your home and test it with water in the pit.

New installation

For a basement or crawlspace that takes on water and has no pump, we plan where the basin goes, how water reaches it and where the discharge line runs.

Backup Options

The storms that fill a sump pit often knock out power too. If your basement has a history of water, we may recommend one of these:

Battery backup pump

A second pump that runs on a battery when the power fails.

Water-powered backup

Uses your home’s water pressure to move water out of the pit, with no battery. It needs a suitable water supply.

High-water alarm

Sounds when the water in the pit climbs too high, so you know before the floor gets wet.

The Discharge Line and Winter Freezing

Where the water goes matters as much as the pump. A line that ends against the foundation sends water back to the pit, so the pump runs the same water over and over. It should carry water well away from the house.

On freezing nights, water left in an outdoor discharge line can freeze and block it. A blocked line leaves the pump running against a dead end. We can reroute or extend a line that holds water and add a fitting that lets water escape if the outside end freezes.

Rappahannock River Flooding

Historic crests at the old gauge

At the old National Weather Service gauge near Fredericksburg, where flood stage is 18 ft, the record crest was 42.6 ft on Oct. 16, 1942. The next highest were 39.1 ft in April 1937 and 39.1 ft in June 1972 during Agnes.

June 2018 in Falmouth

A Stafford homeowner in Falmouth said of the June 2018 flood, “The entire basement is destroyed.”

The river still floods. In May 2025 it was “spilling into low-lying areas along the city’s waterfront” after heavy rain in the Shenandoah Valley, per Potomac Local. A sump pump can’t hold back a river that rises over the yard. Its job is the groundwater that seeps in around your foundation during and after heavy rain.

Sump Pump FAQs

How often should I test my sump pump?

Every few months, and always before the stormy seasons. The bucket test above takes about five minutes.

Why does my sump pump run when it hasn’t rained?

The ground can stay wet for days after a storm, so some running is normal. Constant running with a dry forecast can mean a stuck float, a failed check valve letting water fall back into the pit, or a discharge line that dumps water too close to the house.

What’s the difference between a submersible and a pedestal sump pump?

A submersible pump sits in the pit under water and runs quieter. A pedestal pump keeps its motor up out of the water, which makes it easier to reach and a good fit for narrow pits.

Is a battery backup sump pump worth adding?

If your basement has taken on water before, or you have finished space down there, a backup is worth considering. Heavy storms and power outages often come together, and a main pump can’t run without power.

Will a sump pump protect my basement if the Rappahannock floods?

No. A sump pump handles groundwater, not river water rising over the land. River flooding has destroyed basements here, including a Falmouth home in June 2018, per the Free Lance-Star. If you live near the river, follow local flood warnings and keep valuables off the basement floor.
