Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner
- The unit is more than 10 years old and needs repairs more often
- It runs all afternoon in July and the house still won’t cool down
- Rooms feel damp or clammy even when the air is cool
- Summer electric bills keep climbing with no change in use
- A major part has failed, like the compressor or outdoor coil
A new air conditioner can last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. Once a unit passes 10 years, it’s worth pricing a replacement before the next big repair.
Source: Robert B. PayneA quick rule of thumb: multiply the unit’s age by the repair estimate. If the result is over $4,000, price a replacement. Not there yet? See AC repair.
Central AC, Heat Pump or Ductless?
All three cool your home. The right one depends on your ductwork and how you heat.
| Option | Needs ducts? | Also heats? | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central air conditioner | Yes | No, pairs with a furnace | You have ducts and a gas, propane or oil furnace you want to keep |
| Heat pump | Yes | Yes | You want one system for heat and AC, or you heat with electric resistance today |
| Ductless mini-split | No | Yes | Your home, addition or bonus room has no ductwork |
Fredericksburg’s Historic District covers about 40 blocks, including the original 1728 town site, and more than 200 Federal-era buildings were still standing at the end of the 20th century. Many older homes here were built without ductwork, which is where ductless systems often fit best.

The right size
Air conditioner capacity is measured in BTUs. We find the right number with a load calculation that looks at your home’s size and shape, insulation, windows and doors, ductwork and how cool you like it. An oversized unit cools in short bursts and shuts off before it pulls moisture out of the air, so the house feels cold and sticky. An undersized unit runs nonstop on a 90°F afternoon and never catches up.
The right match
A central air conditioner has two halves: the outdoor condenser and the indoor coil that sits on your furnace or air handler. They need to be rated to work together. Pairing a new outdoor unit with an old, mismatched coil can cut efficiency and shorten the life of the new equipment, so we check the indoor side on every replacement.
What SEER2 Means
SEER2 is the efficiency rating on new air conditioners and heat pumps. It measures how much cooling a system delivers over a typical cooling season for the electricity it uses. Higher is more efficient. SEER2 replaced the older SEER rating and is tested under conditions closer to real ductwork, so a unit’s SEER2 number reads a little lower than its old SEER number.
What Installation Looks Like
Consultation
A technician looks at your current system, ductwork, electrical service and any rooms that never cool well, then runs the load calculation.
Options and pricing
You get the systems that fit your home with a price for each. The price we quote is the price you pay.
Permits
We pull the required mechanical permit for your city or county.
Removal and install
We remove the old equipment and set the new condenser, indoor coil, refrigerant lines, condensate drain and electrical.
Testing and walkthrough
We start the system, test it through a full cooling cycle and show you the thermostat and filter. Then we set you up for yearly AC maintenance.

AC Installation FAQs
Should I replace an air conditioner that’s over 10 years old?
Not automatically. If it still cools well and rarely needs repairs, keep maintaining it. Once it’s past 10 years and repairs are adding up, multiply its age by the repair estimate. If that’s over $4,000, price a replacement.
How is SEER2 different from the old SEER rating?
Both measure seasonal cooling efficiency. SEER2 uses a newer test that better reflects real ductwork, so the same unit gets a slightly lower SEER2 number. Compare SEER2 to SEER2, not to an old SEER label.
Do I need a new indoor coil when I replace my outdoor AC unit?
Usually, yes. The indoor coil and outdoor condenser are rated to work as a pair. A mismatched coil can lower efficiency and strain the new unit. We’ll check yours and tell you if it can stay.
Which air conditioner brands do you install?
We install Amana, Carrier, Coleman, Goodman, Mitsubishi, Trane and York, and we service all brands.
Can I install a central air conditioner myself?
We don’t recommend it. Installing central air means handling refrigerant, high-voltage wiring and a permit, and a DIY install may void the manufacturer’s warranty.
Which building code applies to a new AC inside Fredericksburg city limits?
The City of Fredericksburg has enforced the 2021 Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code since January 18, 2024, including the 2021 International Mechanical Code. See the city’s building codes page. We pull the permit and install to that code.
