If You Smell Gas
Get everyone out of the house. Don’t flip light switches, start a car in the garage, use a lighter or unplug anything on the way out. Once you’re outside and well away from the house, call your gas company or 911. Call us for repairs after the gas company or fire department says it’s safe.
What We Run Gas Lines For
- Furnaces and boilersNew lines for a new system, or for an oil to gas switch
- Water heatersTank and tankless gas units, which can need a larger line
- Ranges and cooktopsA new gas line and shutoff valve behind the stove
- Clothes dryersA capped line and valve in the laundry room
- Fireplaces and gas logsIndoor fireplace inserts and log sets
- Grills, fire pits and patio heatersBuried or wall-run lines to outdoor appliances
- Standby generatorsA line sized to feed the generator at full load
If your home already has gas, we can usually branch a new line off the existing piping, as long as the meter and the main line can carry the added load.
Signs of a Gas Leak
- A rotten-egg or sulfur smell near an appliance or the meter
- A hissing or whistling sound near a gas line
- Dead or yellowed grass in a strip over a buried line
- Bubbles in standing water or mud over a buried line
- A burner flame that’s yellow or lazy instead of steady blue
Natural gas has no smell of its own. Gas utilities add an odorant so you can smell a leak. If you notice any of these signs, follow the safety steps above first.
Once the area is safe, we find the leak, repair or replace the damaged section, and test the line before the gas goes back on. For a furnace or boiler that’s burning poorly, see heating repair.
Sizing, Pressure Testing and Code
Size the line
We add up the gas demand of every appliance on the system and measure the length of the run. A line that’s too small starves appliances at the far end, especially when several run at once.
Install the piping
We choose the pipe type that fits the run and the location, support it properly and put a shutoff valve at each appliance.
Pressure test
Before any gas flows, we pressurize the new piping and watch for a pressure drop that would point to a leak.
Inspect and light
Where a permit is required, the line is inspected. Then we connect the appliance, light it and check it for leaks and a proper flame.
Spotsylvania County’s HVAC permit packet asks for a “Plumbing/ Master Gas Fitting License, Tradesman Statement” and notes that the HVAC classification “does not provide for … gas piping.”

Lines to a detached garage, a grill or a generator often run underground. Before anyone digs, the buried utilities in the yard have to be marked.
Contact 811 “at least three business days (excluding weekends and legal holidays) before beginning any digging project.” “There is no cost to the homeowner for our service,” and calling before you dig “is the LAW.”

Gas Line FAQs
Can I hook up a new gas range or dryer myself?
We don’t recommend it. A connection that isn’t tightened and tested properly can leak, and gas work often needs a licensed installer and a permit. We connect the appliance, test for leaks and check the flame before we leave.
Can you add a gas line for one more appliance?
Usually, yes. We check whether your meter and existing piping can carry the extra demand. If they can, we branch off the existing line. If not, we’ll explain what has to change first.
How do you size a gas line for a standby generator?
We look at how much gas the generator burns at full load, what else in the house runs on gas at the same time and how far the line has to travel. A generator on an undersized line may not put out its rated power.
Do I have to call 811 before you bury a gas line to my grill?
Yes. Virginia law requires a call to 811 at least three business days before digging, and the service is free to homeowners, per Virginia 811. We’ll plan the job around that wait.
Why does a Spotsylvania HVAC permit ask about a gas fitting license?
The County’s mechanical permit packet asks for a “Plumbing/ Master Gas Fitting License” tradesman statement and says the HVAC classification “does not provide for … gas piping,” per the permit packet. Gas piping is its own licensed trade.
