What Counts as an AC Emergency
Call us now
- No cooling during a heat wave, with the indoor temperature climbing
- No cooling in a home with older adults, infants, someone with a medical condition, or pets left inside
- A burning or electrical smell from the indoor or outdoor unit
- The AC trips the breaker again after one reset
- Water leaking through a ceiling or onto finished floors
- Smoke, sparks or loud grinding from the outdoor unit
Usually fine until business hours
- The AC cools, just not as well as last summer
- One room warmer than the rest
- A dirty filter you can replace yourself
- Higher cooling bills than usual
For these, schedule a regular visit or see AC repair.
Staying Cool While You Wait
Block the sun
Close blinds and curtains, especially on south- and west-facing windows. Keep exterior doors shut.
Move air
Run ceiling fans and portable fans. Gather everyone in the coolest room, usually on the lowest floor.
Drink water
Keep water within reach and drink before you feel thirsty. Skip the oven and other appliances that add heat.
Check on people and pets
Look in often on older family members, babies, anyone who is ill and pets. If the house keeps heating up, move them to a cooler place until the repair is done.
If Your AC Trips the Breaker or Ices Up
Tripped breaker
Turn the thermostat off, then reset the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. Repeated resets can damage the compressor or point to an electrical fault that needs a technician.
Ice on the lines or coil
Turn cooling off and set the fan to On so the ice can melt. Replace the filter if it’s dirty. Don’t chip at the ice. Put towels near the indoor unit, since melting ice can overflow the drain pan. Then call us to find out why it froze.

Emergency service runs 24/7, including holidays. Tell us what the system is doing and who’s in the home.
We set priority
We sort calls by how severe the problem is and the health risk to the people inside, so homes with elderly residents or people with medical conditions move up the list.
A technician arrives
Our goal is to reach you within hours of your call. Service vehicles carry common system parts so many repairs happen on the first visit.
Diagnosis and price first
The technician finds the problem and gives you an upfront quote. Work starts only after you approve it.
Fredericksburg Heat Waves and Hard-to-Find Parts
Calls come in waves on the hottest days of the year, when every air conditioner in town is running flat out. If your repair needs a specialized part we don’t have on the truck, we use our local supply network to get it. During extreme heat, we’ll also talk with you about temporary cooling options or faster shipping so you’re not waiting in a hot house.
July is the hottest month here, with an average high of 90°F. Average lows in June, July and August stay between 60°F and 65°F, so homes cool off slowly overnight.

After the Emergency
Many emergency calls end with a simple fix like a capacitor or a cleared drain. If your system is old, needs a major part or has failed more than once this summer, we’ll go over AC replacement options and financing. A spring AC tune-up and our Energy Savings Agreement, which includes priority service, are the best ways to avoid the next one.

When the AC Went Out
Fit me in for a diagnostic same day when my A/C went down on a 100 degree day. Mark figured out the problem quickly and got my unit back online within an hour (thankfully wasn’t a major breakdown). Can’t ask for better than that.
Got ac running again on a Saturday after i called the emergency service number at 4am that morning.
My ac quit at noon on Friday.I had company coming at 5. I called for service. A tech was there by 3. The motor was not working. He got one replaced the old one and we were cooling off by 5. Dinner party saved. Awesome service by all involved. I highly recommend Robert B Payne! …

Emergency AC FAQs
How do you prioritize emergency AC calls during a Fredericksburg heat wave?
We triage by how severe the problem is and the health risk to the people in the home, so elderly residents and people with medical conditions come first. That matters most in July, the area’s hottest month with an average high of 90°F per U.S. Climate Data.
What if my AC needs a part that isn’t on the truck?
Our vehicles carry common system parts. For specialized parts, we use our local supply network, and during extreme heat we’ll talk with you about temporary cooling or expedited shipping.
Should I turn my AC off while I wait for the technician?
Yes, if it’s blowing warm air, making grinding or electrical noises, tripping the breaker or covered in ice. Running a failing system can turn a small repair into a big one. Leave the fans on to keep air moving.
What should I do if my AC has iced over?
Switch cooling off and set the fan to On to melt the ice. Change a dirty filter, put towels near the indoor unit for meltwater, and call us. Ice usually means low refrigerant or an airflow problem.
Is it safe to keep resetting a breaker my AC trips?
Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off. A breaker that keeps tripping is protecting the circuit from an electrical fault, a failing compressor or a bad motor.
Who is most at risk when the AC goes out in summer?
Older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic health conditions and pets have the hardest time with indoor heat. Check on them often, keep them in the coolest room and move them somewhere air-conditioned if the house keeps warming up.
