One Slow Drain or a Main Line Clog?
Single drain clog
- One sink, tub or shower drains slowly
- Every other fixture in the house works normally
- The clog is usually close to the fixture: hair and soap in a bath, grease and food in a kitchen
Main sewer line clog
- Several fixtures slow down at the same time
- Drains or the toilet gurgle when another fixture runs
- Water backs up in the lowest drain first, like a basement floor drain or lower-level shower
- Flushing the toilet makes water rise in the tub
- A sewer smell near floor drains
If you see main line signs, stop running water and flushing until the line is clear. Anything you send down comes back up the lowest drain.
How We Clear a Clog
Ask and look
We ask which fixtures are affected and how long it’s been going on, then find the best access point, such as the fixture drain or the main line cleanout.
Clear the clog
We run a drain cable sized for the pipe to break up the blockage and pull it free.
Check the line
We run water through the fixtures that were backing up and make sure everything drains at full speed.
Tell you what we found
Grease, hair, roots or a foreign object each point to a different fix. We’ll explain the cause and how to keep it from coming back.
When a Clog Keeps Coming Back
If the same line clogs again and again, the cause may be inside the pipe itself. We may recommend one of these options if the job calls for it, and we’ll explain why before any work starts.
Camera inspection
A small camera on a cable travels through the line and shows what’s inside: roots, a crack, a sag that holds water, or a buildup of grease. It tells you whether cleaning is enough or the pipe needs repair.
Water jetting
High-pressure water scours grease and roots off the walls of the pipe instead of just punching a hole through the clog. It isn’t right for every pipe, so we look at the line’s age and condition first.
Your Sewer Line: What You Own in Stafford and Spotsylvania
The pipe that carries waste from your house to the public sewer is called the sewer lateral. Part of it is usually yours to maintain.
| Locality | What the homeowner is responsible for | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Stafford County | Owners are “responsible for their sewer system within their property to the cleanout.” With no cleanout, the owner is responsible for all sewer lines from the property to the VDOT right-of-way or utility easement. | Stafford County Utilities |
| Spotsylvania County | The lateral “is located on your private property,” and the owner is responsible for “all maintenance, operation, cleaning, repair, and reconstruction” of it, including clearing blockages “all the way to the connection with the sewer main.” | Spotsylvania County |

Preventing Clogs
- Pour cooled cooking grease into a can or jar and throw it in the trash. Hot water only moves grease farther down the line before it hardens.
- Scrape plates into the trash before rinsing, even if you have a garbage disposal
- Use a strainer in tub and shower drains to catch hair
- Flush only toilet paper. See what not to flush.

Drain Cleaning FAQs
Why does my toilet gurgle when the washing machine drains?
A large rush of water is pushing air through a partly blocked drain or vent, and the toilet is where it escapes. It often means a clog is forming in the line the two share. Get it cleared before it backs up.
Why does a drain I rarely use start to smell?
Every drain has a trap that holds a little water to block sewer gas. In a guest bath or basement floor drain that sits unused, that water dries up. Pour a quart of water down it. If the smell comes back quickly, the trap or vent may need a look.
How often should a main sewer line be cleaned?
There’s no set schedule. If your line has clogged more than once, or you have large trees near it, ask us about cleaning it on a regular basis before it backs up again.
Do you clear floor drains and laundry drains?
Yes. Basement floor drains and laundry drains often back up first when the main line is clogged, so we check the main line as well.
Can tree roots get into a sewer line in Spotsylvania?
Yes. Spotsylvania County warns that “Broken sewer laterals can allow tree roots or debris into the pipe, which may cause blockages, building backups” (Spotsylvania County). Roots that keep coming back usually point to a crack or loose joint in the line.
If sewage backs up in my Stafford home, who should I call first?
Stafford County Utilities will check its side of the line: (540) 658-8695 during business hours and (540) 658-4857 on nights, weekends and holidays. “There is no charge for this service” (Stafford County Utilities). If the County’s line is clear, call us for your side.
