While You Wait for Your Technician
Stay safe
If there’s an electrical problem or a gas smell, turn the system off. If a CO alarm sounds, leave and wait outdoors or at a neighbor’s.
Hold in the heat
Close windows, doors and fireplace dampers. Keep everyone in one room and layer up.
Try the quick checks
Confirm the thermostat is on Heat, swap a dirty filter, check for a tripped breaker and clear anything blocking vents or the furnace.
Protect your pipes
Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls and let faucets drip slowly. If the repair will take a while, we’ll walk you through shutting off and draining the main water line.
How We Handle Emergency Calls in Winter Storms
Cold snaps bring a wave of no-heat calls at once. When that happens, we prioritize by severity and by who’s in the home, so households with infants or older adults move to the front of the line. Our fleet is equipped to reach customers in difficult driving conditions.
January is the coldest month here, with an average low of 23°F. Pipes in unheated spaces can start freezing when indoor heat is off for long at those temperatures.

After the Emergency: Repair or Replace?
Many emergency calls end with a straightforward fix. If your system is near the end of its life (most last 15 to 20 years), needs a costly repair, or has broken down more than once this winter, we’ll lay out your options for replacement along with financing. A yearly tune-up or our Energy Savings Agreement with priority service is the best way to avoid the next one.

When the Heat Went Out
Robert Payne sent someone out a few hours after we called as our heat suddenly stopped working. …
Our heat went out. I called 3 companies and I knew Robert B Payne would work us in the same day. (They did!). Jason correctly diagnosed the problem, then RBP sent a courier up to MD to get the part and Jason installed it today. Our house is cozy warm again. …
Jon was very friendly and explained things to me as he worked to fix our no heat issue. Very pleased.

Emergency Heating FAQs
Do you really answer at night and on weekends?
Yes. Technicians are on call 24/7, including holidays. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but emergency service doesn’t stop when the office closes.
What makes a heating breakdown dangerous?
Gas and oil systems that aren’t burning correctly can release carbon monoxide. Heating failures can also cause electrical shock, gas leak and fire hazards, and a long outage can lead to frozen pipes. That’s why we treat no-heat calls as urgent.
How do I keep my pipes from freezing if the heat is out?
Open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air reaches the pipes, and keep faucets on a slow drip. If the repair will take a long time, we can explain how to shut off and drain your main water line.
Is it safe to use space heaters while I wait?
Use only electric space heaters designed for indoor use, keep them at least three feet from anything that can burn, and plug them straight into the wall. Never heat your home with a gas oven, grill or generator indoors.
Do you handle emergencies on oil heat?
Yes. We repair oil furnaces and boilers, and if you’ve simply run out of fuel, ask about heating oil delivery.
What happens to my heat if Fredericksburg loses power in a winter storm?
Most gas and oil furnaces and boilers need electricity to run their controls and blowers, so they stop when the power goes out. During the January 3–4, 2022 storm, Fredericksburg got at least 14 inches of snow and nearly 300,000 Virginia customers lost power. Keep a working carbon monoxide alarm, never run a generator indoors or in a garage, and call us if the system won’t restart once power is back. Source: CNN Wire via WPVI.
