Smart, Programmable or Non-Programmable?
All three control your system. The difference is how much they do on their own.
| Type | How you set it | Schedule | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital non-programmable | Buttons on the unit | None. It holds what you set. | Someone is home most of the day and you like simple controls |
| Programmable (7-day or 5/2-day) | On the unit | Set times and temperatures by day, or weekdays vs. weekends | Your week follows a routine |
| Smart | On the unit or a phone app over Wi-Fi | Full schedule, plus changes from anywhere | Your schedule shifts, or you want to track energy use |
Our digital programmable models offer up to four temperature settings per day, automatic changeover between heating and cooling, vacation scheduling, keypad lockout, backlighting and outdoor air temperature display.
Nexia Thermostats
- 7-day programming with up to six schedules per day
- Touchscreen display
- Automatic switching between heating and cooling
- Z-Wave wireless to connect with compatible home devices
Higher-end models like Nexia also watch how your system runs. They can alert you to short-cycling or to heating and cooling that takes longer than it should, which can flag a problem before the system stops working.
Matching a Thermostat to Your System
Not every thermostat works with every system. We check yours before you buy.
Heat pumps and dual-fuel
A heat pump needs a thermostat that switches it between heating and cooling and calls for auxiliary heat when the heat pump needs help. A thermostat built for a furnace and AC can’t manage that properly. Dual-fuel systems pair a heat pump with a gas or oil furnace, and the thermostat decides which one runs.
Multi-stage and the C-wire
Two-stage and variable-speed equipment needs a thermostat that can control each stage, or you lose the benefit you paid for. Most smart thermostats also need steady power from a common wire, called a C-wire. Older wiring often doesn’t have one, so we check and tell you what it takes before installing.
What Our Thermostat Installation Includes
Wiring check
We confirm the wiring at the thermostat and the equipment matches your system type and stages.
Mounting, leveling and calibration
We level the thermostat and check it against a precise thermometer, so what it reads matches the room.
Programming your schedule
We set wake, away, home and sleep times around your week.
Walkthrough
We show you how to adjust and hold temperatures, and on a smart thermostat we set up the app with you.
Signs Your Thermostat Is the Problem
- The screen is blank or flickers
- It shows a temperature that doesn’t match the room
- The system won’t start, or won’t shut off, when you change the setting
- The system short-cycles, turning on and off every few minutes
A reading that’s off is often caused by a thermostat that isn’t level, a faulty sensor or plain age. If a new thermostat doesn’t fix it, the problem is in the equipment. See heating repair, AC repair or heat pump repair.

Thermostat Customers Say
Technician throughly checked our system and recommended new thermostats and explained benefits on those he had on the truck. He was very pleasant to work with both time he has come out to our house.
Crew arrived as scheduled, were friendly and efficient. They answered my questions, walked me through new thermostat, and left no trace behind that they had been there. One installer had installed my old unit (16 years ago). They didn't mind my dogs occaisionally investigating.
Tim was our technician. He did a great job explaining what the initial problem was when the thermostat and A/C stopped working. He was able to fix the problem on the spot and tested the system before he left. We were still under warranty, so there was NO cost.

Thermostat FAQs
Why does my thermostat show a different temperature than my thermometer?
The usual causes are a thermostat that isn’t level, a faulty sensor or an older unit wearing out. We level and calibrate thermostats against a precise thermometer when we install them.
What is a C-wire, and does a smart thermostat need one?
The C-wire, or common wire, gives the thermostat constant power. Most smart thermostats need it to keep Wi-Fi and the screen running. If your wiring doesn’t have one, we’ll tell you the options before you buy.
Will any thermostat work with a heat pump?
No. A heat pump thermostat has to switch the system between heating and cooling and bring on auxiliary heat when needed. Check that a thermostat is rated for heat pumps, or let us pick one that matches your system.
What does Z-Wave do on a Nexia thermostat?
Z-Wave is a wireless standard that lets the thermostat connect with other compatible devices in your home, so they can work together from one system.
Where is the best spot on the wall for a thermostat?
An inside wall in a room you use, away from direct sun, supply vents, exterior doors and the kitchen. Heat or drafts near the thermostat make it read wrong and run the system at the wrong times.
How deep should I set back a heat pump thermostat on a Fredericksburg winter night?
Keep it modest. January nights here average a low of 23°F, per U.S. Climate Data. A big setback means a big jump in the morning, and a heat pump often calls on auxiliary heat to make that jump, which costs more to run. A thermostat built for heat pumps can bring the temperature back up more gradually.
