Some homes also have a combi boiler, which heats the house and supplies hot water to your taps from one unit. A standard boiler only heats the house, so the home also needs a water heater.
Radiators, Baseboard & Radiant Floor Heat
A boiler is only half the system. The other half is how the heat gets into your rooms:
- Cast-iron radiators hold heat and keep giving it off after the boiler cycles off
- Baseboard convectors run along exterior walls and warm the air as it rises
- Radiant floor heat circulates warm water through tubing under the floor, so the floor itself becomes the heater
Because none of these use ducts, a boiler doesn’t blow dust around the house, and it’s easy to split the home into zones with their own thermostats. We repair radiant floor systems as well as the boiler that feeds them, including zone valves, circulators and mixing controls.

Older Fredericksburg Homes With Radiators

Boiler Safety
Turn the boiler off at its service switch and keep clear of the relief valve. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Then call us at 540-300-6932.
Keep a working carbon monoxide alarm on each floor, keep storage away from the boiler and its venting, and never cap or plug a relief valve that drips. A dripping valve is a sign something else needs attention.

How do I know if I have a hot water or steam boiler?
Look near the boiler. A hot water system has a pressure gauge, a circulator pump and usually an expansion tank. A steam boiler has a glass tube showing the water level, and its radiators have small vents that hiss as they heat.
Do you install new boilers?
