Why Spring AC Maintenance Matters in Fredericksburg
Your air conditioner sits idle all winter, then runs for hours a day once summer arrives. Dirt on the coils, a weak capacitor or a slow drain line won’t show up in April. They show up on the first 90°F afternoon, when the system is working hardest.
A tune-up in March, April or May gives a technician time to find those problems while the weather is mild. You fix them on your schedule and skip the summer rush, when every AC company in the area is booked.
Fredericksburg’s average highs are 85°F in June, 90°F in July and 88°F in August. July is the hottest month of the year.

- Condenser coil cleaning
- Electrical connection and control checks
- Lubrication of moving parts

Indoor unit

Cooling Tune-Ups for Every Kind of System
Central air conditioners
Once a year, in spring. Your furnace gets its own visit in the fall through heating maintenance.
Heat pumps
Twice a year, because a heat pump heats and cools. The spring visit covers the cooling side. See heat pumps.
Ductless mini-splits
Each indoor head has its own filter and coil, so we clean and check every head along with the outdoor unit. See ductless mini-splits.
What You Can Do Between Visits
- Look at the filter every few weeks during cooling season, since AC runs pull more dust through it
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of shrubs, leaves and grass clippings
- Keep supply and return vents open and unblocked
- Pour a cup of water in the condensate drain’s access port, if you have one, to make sure it drains
- Set the thermostat to Cool and the fan to Auto when the season changes
If the house still feels damp with the AC running, read do air conditioners dehumidify? or see whole-home dehumidifiers.
Before you clean around or rinse the outdoor unit, switch off the outdoor disconnect and the AC breaker. Leave electrical parts, refrigerant lines and the inside of the unit to a technician.

Book AC maintenance in spring, before you need cooling every day. Don’t wait for spring if the AC is already making new noises, turning on and off every few minutes, dripping indoors or running up your summer bills. For the noises, our guide to why your AC is making noise can help. If your air conditioner is past 10 years old, a tune-up is also a good time to ask whether AC replacement makes sense.

AC Maintenance FAQs
Can I hose off my outdoor AC unit myself?
Yes, with the power off at the disconnect and breaker. Use a gentle spray from the inside out if you can reach it, or from the outside in if you can’t. Don’t use a pressure washer, which can bend the coil fins.
Does my AC need refrigerant added at every tune-up?
No. Refrigerant circulates in a sealed loop and isn’t used up. We check the level at each tune-up, and if it’s low, that points to a leak that should be found and repaired. See AC repair.
Is there a plan that covers my AC and heating tune-ups together?
Yes. Our Energy Savings Agreement includes annual heating and AC tune-ups, 15% off parts, labor and overtime, and priority service.
When does an air conditioner work hardest in Fredericksburg?
July. It’s Fredericksburg’s hottest month, with an average high of 90°F and an average low of 65°F, so your AC gets little rest even at night. Average highs are 85°F in June and 88°F in August. Source: U.S. Climate Data.
Can Fredericksburg-area Dominion Energy customers get a smart thermostat rebate?
Eligible Dominion Energy Virginia customers can get an instant smart thermostat rebate and join Smart Thermostat Rewards. Check eligibility on Dominion’s home energy page, and see our thermostats page for installation.
What’s the difference between an AC tune-up and an AC repair?
A tune-up is scheduled preventive care: cleaning, testing and adjusting a system that’s still running. A repair fixes something that has already failed. If a tune-up turns up a problem, we explain it and give you upfront pricing before any repair work. See AC repair.
