Why Fall Maintenance Matters in Fredericksburg
Our winters are mild by northern standards, but overnight lows still drop below freezing from December through February. That’s when a heating system runs longest and when a worn part is most likely to fail.
A tune-up in September, October or early November lets a technician catch a weak igniter, a dirty burner or a failing motor while you still have time to fix it on your schedule. You also skip the wait that comes with the first cold snap, when every heating company in the area is busy.
Fredericksburg’s average lows are 27°F in December, 23°F in January and 25°F in February. January is the coldest month of the year.

Every maintenance visit covers the basics that keep a system safe and running well:
- Filter check and replacement
- Thermostat calibration
- Electrical connection and control checks
- Lubrication of moving parts
- Burner and heat exchanger cleaning on gas and oil systems
- Fuel supply check
- Carbon monoxide testing on gas systems
If we find something that needs repair, we’ll explain it and give you an upfront price before any work begins.
Maintenance by System Type
Gas furnaces
Once a year, before heating season. We clean the burners and heat exchanger, check the controls and wiring, confirm the fuel supply and test for carbon monoxide. See furnaces.
Oil furnaces & boilers
Once a year, before heating season. Oil burns dirtier than gas, so soot cleanup on the burner and heat exchanger matters more. Oil service can also include nozzles, filters, fuel pumps, ignition parts and combustion efficiency testing. On hot water systems, radiators may need bleeding. See boilers.
Heat pumps
Twice a year, once before heating season and once before cooling season, because a heat pump runs year-round. We check the electrical connections, controls, thermostat and filter. See heat pumps.
What You Can Do Between Visits
- Check your filter monthly and replace it when it’s dirty
- Keep the area around the furnace or boiler clear of storage
- Keep vents and registers open and unblocked
- Keep the outdoor heat pump unit clear of leaves, snow and shrubs
- Reprogram your thermostat when the seasons change
For step-by-step help, read our guides to changing furnace filters and cleaning furnace intake and exhaust pipes.
Test carbon monoxide detectors monthly, especially in homes with gas or oil heat. If a detector alarms, get everyone outside and call 911 from there.

Book heating maintenance in early fall, before you need heat every night. If your system both heats and cools, schedule a second visit in spring for the cooling side. Heat-only systems like furnaces and boilers need one visit a year, before winter.
Schedule sooner if your system is making new noises, cycling on and off, or your heating bills have jumped. If your equipment is approaching 15 to 20 years old, a tune-up is also a good time to ask whether replacement makes sense.

Heating Maintenance FAQs
How often should my heating system be serviced?
Furnaces and boilers need a tune-up once a year, before heating season. Heat pumps should be serviced twice a year because they heat and cool.
Is a tune-up worth it if my system is working fine?
Yes. Maintenance is how small problems get found before they turn into a no-heat call on a cold night. It also keeps burners clean and controls working properly. It can’t prevent every repair, but it lowers the odds of a surprise.
How long does a tune-up take?
It depends on the system and what we find. We’ll give you a time window when you book.
When should Fredericksburg homeowners schedule a heating tune-up?
Early fall, before you need the heat. Overnight lows in Fredericksburg average 27°F in December and 23°F in January, so September through November is the time to catch worn parts. Source: U.S. Climate Data.
Does Dominion Energy offer free heat pump tune-ups?
For some customers, yes. Dominion Energy Virginia offers no-cost heat pump tune-ups, duct sealing and air sealing to customers who qualify by income, or by age 60 and older within income limits. Check eligibility on the program page. Source: Dominion Energy Virginia.
