Sizing a New Water Heater
Tank water heaters come in sizes from 30 to 80 gallons. The right size depends on how many people live in the house and how they use hot water. We ask about bathrooms, large tubs and how often fixtures run at the same time.
Tankless units are sized differently. What matters is how many fixtures you run at once and how cold the incoming water is. Incoming water is colder in winter, so a tankless unit has to work harder in January than in July.

What size water heater does a family of four need?
Usually a 40- or 50-gallon tank. Those are the most popular sizes and suit households of 2 to 5 people. If you have a large soaking tub or run several showers back to back, we may suggest going bigger.
Is a tankless water heater worth the higher upfront cost?
It depends on your home. A tank costs less to buy and install. A tankless unit takes less space and doesn’t run out of stored hot water, but it has to be sized for how many fixtures you use at once and may need gas line, venting or electrical upgrades. We’ll price both so you can compare.
Can I get a Dominion Energy rebate on a heat pump water heater in Fredericksburg?
