Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Repair
- The AC runs but the air from the vents isn’t cold
- Weak airflow, even with a clean filter
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin
- Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil
- Water pooling near the indoor unit or furnace
- Short-cycling: the system starts and stops every few minutes
- Hissing, clicking, rattling or grinding
- The thermostat calls for cooling and nothing happens
July is Fredericksburg’s hottest month, with an average high of 90°F, and August averages 88°F. A system that barely keeps up in June usually falls behind by midsummer.

These take a few minutes and sometimes solve the problem. If they don’t, call us.
-
Thermostat
Set it to Cool, set the fan to Auto, and set the temperature a few degrees below the room. Replace the batteries if the screen is dim or blank.
-
Air filter
A clogged filter cuts airflow and can cause the indoor coil to freeze. Replace it if it’s gray or dusty.
-
Breakers and disconnect
Check the panel for a tripped breaker for the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. Make sure the disconnect box beside the outdoor unit is on.
-
Outdoor unit
Clear leaves, grass clippings and shrubs away from the condenser so it can release heat.
-
Condensate drain
If water is standing in the drain pan under the indoor unit, a clogged drain may have tripped a safety switch that shuts the AC off. Call us to clear it.
The capacitor in your outdoor unit can hold a dangerous electrical charge even with the power off. Don’t open the unit or try to add refrigerant yourself.
Common AC Repairs
Our technicians work on all brands and carry parts for the most common failures. These are the repairs we make most often.
| Part or problem | What you notice | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitor | Outdoor unit hums but won’t start, or the fan won’t spin | Test and replace the failed capacitor |
| Contactor | Outdoor unit won’t turn on, or won’t turn off | Replace worn or pitted contactors |
| Refrigerant leak | Warm air, hissing, ice on the lines, long run times | Find and repair the leak, then recharge to the correct level |
| Frozen evaporator coil | Ice on the indoor coil or lines, little or no airflow | Thaw the coil and fix the cause, such as low refrigerant or poor airflow |
| Clogged condensate drain | Water leaking indoors, or the AC shutting off on its own | Flush and clear the line, and add a float switch if needed |
| Condenser fan motor | Fan on top of the outdoor unit is slow, noisy or stopped | Replace the motor or fan blade |
| Compressor | Loud clanking or no cooling with the fan running | Diagnose the compressor and its controls, then repair or lay out replacement options |
| Thermostat | Blank screen, wrong readings, AC won’t respond | Repair, recalibrate or replace the thermostat |
Problem in the indoor unit, like a failed blower motor or a cracked drain pan? See air handler repair. Ductless system acting up? We repair those too, see ductless mini-splits.
How an AC Repair Visit Works
-
You call or book online
Tell us what the system is doing and when it started. We’ll schedule the first available visit.
-
We diagnose the problem
The technician checks the thermostat, electrical parts, refrigerant pressures, airflow and drain, and finds the cause behind the symptom.
-
You get the price first
We explain what failed and give you upfront pricing. No work starts until you approve it.
-
We repair it and test it
After the repair, we run the system and measure the air coming out of the vents to confirm it’s cooling the way it should.
Repair or Replace Your AC?
Most repairs make sense. If your air conditioner is more than 10 to 15 years old, needs a major part like a compressor, or has broken down more than once this summer, a new system may cost less over time. We’ll give you an honest comparison. See AC installation and replacement, and ask about financing.
A yearly AC tune-up catches many of these problems early. Our Energy Savings Agreement includes annual tune-ups, 15% off parts, labor and overtime, and priority service.

AC Repair FAQs
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
The most common causes are a dirty filter, a tripped breaker for the outdoor unit, a failed capacitor or fan motor, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filter and breakers first. If the air is still warm, turn the system off and call us.
Is water leaking from my indoor AC unit an HVAC or plumbing problem?
It’s usually an HVAC problem. A clogged condensate drain line, a cracked drain pan or a frozen coil that’s thawing are the usual sources. We clear the line with flush-and-clear tools and can add a float switch that shuts the AC off when it detects a backup, before water reaches your floors.
Can I add refrigerant to my AC myself?
No. Recharging refrigerant takes a licensed technician. Low refrigerant also means there’s a leak, so adding more without fixing the leak only buys a little time.
What does an AC capacitor do, and why does it fail?
The capacitor gives the compressor and outdoor fan motor the jolt they need to start. Age and summer heat wear it out. When it fails, the outdoor unit often hums but won’t start. It’s one of the most common AC repairs we make.
Why does my AC run nonstop on July afternoons in Fredericksburg?
July is the area’s hottest month, with an average high of 90°F per U.S. Climate Data, so long run times on hot afternoons are normal. If the house keeps getting warmer, or the system still runs after the evening cools down, check the filter and call us for a diagnosis.
What does a hissing or rattling AC mean?
Hissing can point to a refrigerant leak. Rattling often means a loose panel, debris in the outdoor unit or a failing fan motor. Turn the system off and call us. Read more in why is my AC making so much noise?
Do you repair the indoor air handler too?
Yes. We repair blower motors, coils, drain pans and control boards in the indoor unit. See air handler repair.
